So, it is important to take good care of the computer you are using. Cooler fans are used to keep your whole CPU in a good and healthy condition. But as we have many choices, it becomes difficult to choose which cooling fan is the best choice for your computer! Today in our blog we will be comparing a 140mm fan vs a 120mm cooling fan.

Introduction

A fan is a rotating appliance with few blades which create a current of air for cooling. It is also used for ventilation purposes. A computer cooling fan is basically needed to remove the heat waste which is created by the flow of electricity inside the CPU. It actually does the work of maintaining a permissible operating temperature. Components such as CPU, hard disk, Graphics card, chipsets, and others create an extra amount of heat which is harmful to the computer you are using. So, it is important for any user to use cooler fans for their computer. These fans are often known as Axial-flow fans as it exhales heat from any sealed device which creates heat that might hamper the machine. 

In a normal way, any type of axial fan is suitable for a substantial rate of flowing with a relatively handy pressure gained by the fan, and centrifugal fans are used for any handy rate of air flowing and a large amount of pressure gain. The pressure that is developed by a fan is small if you compare it to the pressure developed by a compressor of the fan. The abilities of any fan range start from 100  and end at 500,000 cubic feet per minute. It can also match the pressure from 3 to 14,000 cubic meters per minute.

Components of A Fan 

A fan is basically made with a motor. Except that it has some other vital components such as blades, impellers, ball bearings, and so on.

  • Fan Housing or Casing: The structure which holds the impeller is called the casing. This does the work of ventilation. It handles the air and passes through the ventilation system.
  • The motor pedestal: It is installed in the case as the support of the blower fan. 
  • Bearings: Different kinds of bearings are being used in different kinds of cooling fans. As there are many options to use in a cooling fan. So, It depends on the brand you are using. Different brands use different bearings. Some of the bearings that are being used as a component of a case cooling fan are sleeve bearing, rifle bearing, fluid bearing, ball bearing, magnetic bearing(this is also known as maglev bearing).

120mm Fan:

The main advantage that the 120mm fans give is these fans have larger blades than the other common-sized fans. So, the machines do not have to be faster to work more efficiently. It gives a good amount of airflow without a very powerful machine as it contains big blades.

These fans are efficient in their own ways. They might not be silent sometimes. Within the case opening the PWM system is almost barely audible as at a distance of any matter at full rev. But there are no other kinds of sounds that come from the case. The LED fans with a unique lighting system make it quieter. RPM fans that are fixed are considered very silent. Generally, 120mm fans are quieter if we compare them with other fans. It also moves more air comparing to other fans. But the problem that will always come to your mind is the size of the fan. If you compare then the size of a 120mm fan is bigger than other fans. But when it comes to comparing the cooling capability of a 120mm fan then the heat a CPU/GPU creates can easily be controlled by a 120mm fan. You won’t be able to mark the difference if you don’t compare carefully. But there is a slight difference which is not even worth the time considering.

Everything that we have written about the 140mm fans can be summed up in the following: They are Big, quiet, and powerful fans. Their build quality makes them ideal for PC builds. They’re also the more powerful fans in their size class (120mm or 140mm) but they’re also dirt cheap. And as well as it gives a good amount of airflow for appearing a cooling air in the heat cases.

  • 140mm fans are 1000rpm. Whereas 120mm fans are up to 1200rmp
  • The sound which might bother you depends on the model or the brand.
  • The airflow CMF(Cubic Feet Per Minutes) is creating a major difference. 140mm fan is higher CFM. Whereas 120mm fan is low CFM
  • The dimensions are: 120mm is 120×10×25mm where 140mm is 140×140×25mm.
  • The number of slots in 120mm is 2 and in 120mm is3.
  • The price of 120mm is quite affordable but the 140mm fan is partially affordable.
  • 120mm fans or 140mm fans which is better?

The answer to this question depends on many considering matters. Those matters are your budget, the build quality of your computer case, your need, your using purpose, etc. Both of the fans have different and unique qualities that make them worth spending product. So, If you feel the features of a 120mm fan will satisfy your need for now but in the future, you might have to change it for bigger purposes then 140mm fans are your perfect choice. But in a short budget 120mm fans will surely give you satisfaction while using.

Which is quieter 2*140mm or 3*120mm fans?

So basically the 2*140mm fans will push more air than the 3*120mm fans. 2*140mm fans or 3*120mm fans are making a quite negligible difference to your CPU/GPU temperatures which are not even worth considering. And mainly just purchase the fan which fits your budget or looks best. But to be honest the larger fans are mostly quieter.

  • Can you mix 120mm and 140mm fans?

Basically, it is not an issue for almost all cases. If you want to have different types and sizes of fans then it is your choice. But no companies or brands are planning to mix the features of 120mm fans and 140mm fans as they are showing good performance with their unique features.

  • Should I buy a 120mm Fan or 140mm Fan?

For getting better performance, good airflow benefits, and good temperature maintenance, you would prefer to buy the 140mm case fan because recently it is showing the ideal performance in every possible way. If you prefer a budget-friendly good cooling fan for the PC case of yours, then the 120mm case fans are the best choice. 

  • Do Case Fans make a difference?

It is said that the extra case fans help a little bit when your card’s cooler dump makes an excess heat into the case rather than exhausting out the back but if it comes to compare then it might not show a big difference.

  • Why do I need extra PC fans?

You need to buy cases that have a minimum of 3 fans. “NO”. 140mm fans do not create more sound comparing to 120mm fans. The larger fans move more air most of the time and also spins at a lower RPM. So they do not create so much of a buffeting sound.

  • Can you fit a 140mm fan in a 120mm case?

The direct answer depends on some facts and conditions. The size of a 140mm fan is basically square with mounting holes at the 4 corners. and 120mm fans are also the same with a square shape and 4 mounting holes. But 120mm fans can be round or octagonal that are shaped with small tabs. Sometimes 140mm fans come with mounting small tabs or small ears that match the 120mm fan’s mounting holes. So, If a 140mm fan will fit in a 120mm fan’s case depends on the mounting holes or ears on which they will be set up.
